Dhaka city has experienced significant urban growth during last fifty years. Land uses have undergone a massive unplanned development since the liberation war of Bangladesh in 1971. The rapid growth of population and increasing demand for better livelihood act as a major propelling force for this unplanned development. This resulted in outward expansion of Dhaka city toward its peripheral vicinity. Eventually Tejgaon become the major attraction for immense industrial activity to meet the ever increasing demand of growing population and finds it location in the core of the city from the peripheral location as designated in 1959 master plan of Dhaka city. Incessant changes in land uses have altered the physical characteristics of the area from the state as it was designed by Dhaka Improvement Trust (DIT) in 1968. Recently government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh has taken a decision to develop the area as a commercial cum residential hub. Therefore this research explores the existing land use scenario and development trend of Tejgaon industrial area from land use perspective. Land use information of the study area includes information on characteristics, ownership and value of land parcel and detail information on existing structures. Development trend of the study area is investigated by means of information like growth of major land uses in the study area, change in land use pattern, structure type and structure height within the plots, change in ownership pattern and land value. Finally as a major outcome, this research has revealed that there exists an increasing trend of commercial activities and the rate of growth of commercial activities in this area greater than that of industrial one. The findings can be used to provide targeted solutions by addressing specific problems in the parking tendencies. This research can act as a base line study for future development plan related to the study area.

Landslides are a common hazard in the highly urbanized hilly areas in Chittagong Metropolitan Area (CMA), Bangladesh. The main cause of the landslides is torrential rain in short period of time. This area experiences several landslides each year, resulting in casualties, property damage, and economic loss. Therefore, the primary objective of this research is to produce the Landslide Susceptibility Maps for CMA so that appropriate landslide disaster risk reduction strategies can be developed. In this research, three different Geographic Information System-based Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis methods—the Artificial Hierarchy Process (AHP), Weighted Linear Combination (WLC), and Ordered Weighted Average (OWA)—were applied to scientifically assess the landslide susceptible areas in CMA. Nine different thematic layers or landslide causative factors were considered. Then, seven different landslide susceptible scenarios were generated based on the three weighted overlay techniques. Later, the performances of the methods were validated using the area under the relative operating characteristic curves. The accuracies of the landslide susceptibility maps produced by the AHP, WLC_1, WLC_2, WLC_3, OWA_1, OWA_2, and OWA_3 methods were found as 89.80, 83.90, 91.10, 88.50, 90.40, 95.10, and 87.10 %, respectively. The verification results showed satisfactory agreement between the susceptibility maps produced and the existing data on the 20 historical landslide locations.

In Bangladesh, as in many other parts of Asia, the quality and coverage of service provision is generally poor and systems for faecal sludge management are ineffective. Both centralised and local agencies struggle to keep pace with the rate of urban development and hence many communities suffer from environmental health related problems due to the poor collection and treatment of faecal sludge. Kushtia Municipality with the support from the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) and UNCRD and in partnership with the Department of Environment, Ministry of Environment & Forest, has introduced 3R (reduce, reuse and recycling of Waste) initiatives in Kushtia Pourashava through a number of interventions (i.e., source separation of waste, awareness and training programs, decentralized co-composting etc.) in 2008. The municipality has established a Compost Plant at Baradi, about 3.5 km from city center. The plant has a full time supervisor and 8 full time labors in its own to run the plant effectively. Now through 3 Vacutug (a machine of collecting faecal sludge) operations, the municipality is regularly collecting faecal sludge from the Septic-tank and Pit-latrines of the city dwellers and using it for co-composting which ultimately produces good quality compost fertilizer. However, this report illustrates the initiatives or mechanism taken by the municipality for faecal sludge management which were designed and implemented with a perspective of pro-poor development.

The term “Good Faith” is considered as a divisive term under discussion in modern English contract law. United Kingdom is an example of the most sterile jurisdiction for the growth of the term “Good Faith” although the origin of the doctrine was established in the English court. In Singapore the question of good faith has not arisen before, until the court appeal judgment in the case of Ng Giap Hon v west comb securities Pte Ltd and others. The court had the first chance of introducing the term “ Good Faith” into the contract law in Singapore, but the court of appeal just failed to do so even in a soft approach way. Mainly with the mounting importance of transitional law the impact of the term “Good Faith” on English and Singaporean law is possibly to rise in the future. This research explore how mach important the term of “Good Faith” in English and Singaporean law.

Landslides are common geophysical hazards in the highly urbanized hilly areas of Cox’s Bazar Municipality, Bangladesh. Every year, during the monsoon, landslides cause human casualties, property damage, and economic losses. Indiscriminate hill cutting, developing settlements in dangerous hill slopes, and torrential rainfall in short period of time are responsible for triggering landslide disasters. The aim of this paper is to produce landslide susceptibility maps (LSM) to help reduce the risks of landslides. Geographic information system and remote sensing-based techniques were used for LSM considering 12 relevant factor maps (i.e. slope, land cover, NDVI, geology, geomorphology, soil moisture, rainfall pattern, distance from road, drain, stream, structure, and faults–linea- ments). For the modelling purpose, four techniques were implemented—artificial hierarchy process (AHP), weighted linear combination (WLC), logistic regression (LR), and multiple logistic regression (MLR). A landslide inventory map with 74 historical landslide locations was prepared by field surveying. The modelling results are validated using the area under the relative operating characteristics curves (AUC). AUC values of AHP, WLC, LR, and MLR methods are calculated as 88, 85.90, 74.90, and 90.40 %, respectively.

Ensuring safety is one of the foremost concerns of any development activities, but Bangladesh somehow become inmate of crime and criminal offences. Crime hampers development activities in different behaviors. For tackling present crime situation of Bangladesh, the role is playing by government agencies and Special Forces for managing the crime is not speedy and reasonable. The situation is worsening day after day. It is essential that every part of the society and professionals need to play their respective roles and duties accordingly. Thus, decision-makers and the citizens should re-think about strategies to make secure living environment in the cities and ensure harmonious planned physical development in the long-run. Ensuring this concept, relevant public law enforcement authorities are following a legal mandate ensuring public safety. But, what is the result, in case of planned development hampers in the urban fringe areas due to crime? What is planners’ role and how can physical planning elements can be used as crime prevention tools? This research tries to find those answers.
