Accessibility indicates the relative easy to access of a certain opportunity & actually it is the result of interaction of land use & transportation system. For urban planning practice a number of methods so far has been developed, but in recent time space-time accessibility measurement technique has been developed by different geographer which considers space constrain of human activity along with the time constrain unlike the traditional methods. Recently, urban planners are also contributing to the space-time concepts with proper application of this concept to the real world accessibility problem of the urban area. This paper shows how the concepts of space-time prisms can be applied to measuring accessibility to punctiform urban services where punctiform services are those, which delivered from a specific point & has a spatial dimension. Besides measuring the accessibility, this paper also shows the gap between the existing land uses of Khulna City in respect of supply of services with the accessibility of the residents for the selected residential areas. In case of selecting the location of punctiform urban services delivering, this type of accessibility measurement is necessary to reduce the waste of resource like time, money, energy for both service suppliers & service consumers.

Housing stress portraits the existing condition of housing in terms of some selected indicators. It is a vital tool for accessing the accessibility of existing service and facilities in a certain area for its dwellers. Often this type of tools are effective for the city development authority to identify the extent of improvements required for the betterment of the dweller in order to ensure better housing condition. This paper shows a method of housing stress analysis in selected areas of Khulna, Bangladesh. This paper also shows how socio-economic information of the dwellers along with the spatial information can be used together for planning for the housing of an urban area. Using simple geographic-information system (GIS) tools this initiatives can be amplified for the housing provision of a entire city. The findings of the paper shows, a very few of the area are served with better housing facilities. For further extension of the area and providing service and facilities by the authority, the locational advantage and disadvantage should have to consider in order to getting optimum outcome which can be directed by different scenario analysis shown in this paper.

Apposite landuse of an area ensures harmony in general development especially where business and industrial activities exist in a large scale. Therefore commercial and industrial landuses are always considered as two significant elements of sustainable city planning as well as providing support to the local economies. Usually industrial sites within the cities are often small, and are surrounded by neighborhoods. The increased pollution caused by industrial activities pose a serious, often insurmountable threat to neighborhood stability, economic development, public health and safety and quality of life like brownfield effect. A brownfield is a site, or portion thereof, that has actual or perceived contamination and an active potential for redevelopment or reuse. Brown field properties vary in size, location, age, and past use. Irrespective of true potential, these sites often remain unloved and unused due to the inconvenience, uncertainty and liabilities that clean up responsibility entails and this approach may affect people in a negative manner. Conversely, brownfield recovery by redevelopment of the site or through transforming it into other land use can result green neighborhoods, resolve development versus preservation conflicts, promote economic expansion and inhibit sprawl. In Bangladesh, a great mix up of industrial and residential activities has also been occurring in major cities particularly in Dhaka city due to rapid urbanization. As a result capital is expanding to its peripheral zones. Residential areas are in huge shortage of ancillary facilities. Hazaribagh Area near Dhanmondi, in the heart of the Dhaka City experiences similar crisis as well; low and middle income settlers are settling in this zone and suffering from the shortage of urban service facilities. Further more toxic pollutant from the tannery industries is a serious threat for them. High rate of contamination is leading this organically built up zone unlivable. This uncontrolled existence of toxic industrial zone along with residential areas has extended its pressure on physical condition of the environment and the area now has been transformed into a brown field. An extensive revitalization of this area thus is very much essential right now otherwise it will be very difficult to manage these issues effectively in the future. In this study, it is tried to review the phase wise steps and tools of brownfield development techniques used worldwide and are contextual for the redevelopment of Hazaribagh Area in Dhaka City.

Road traffic accidents are the world’s number one cause of death among young people between 16 and 24. Bangladesh has one of the highest fatality rate in road accidents in the world. Moreover, Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, is the most vulnerable city both in terms of total number of accidents and accident rates. A total number of 2,720 accidents occurred within 2007-2011. This has caused a total of 1,481 numbers of pedestrian fatal accidents with 1,562 pedestrian fatal casualties. At this backdrop, road safety problem has become one of the major issues for the transport regulators and traffic law enforcers in Dhaka. The objective of this research is to identify the most accident-prone roads, the victims as well the in-depth reasons for traffic accident in Dhaka Metropolitan Area. In this article, the road safety situation and traffic accident trends are discussed elaborately. It also discusses some contemporary issues and priorities in addressing the road safety problems. Based on the findings of this study, some recommendations related to Engineering, Enforcement, Educational and Emergency Response aspects are made. This kind of research will help generating new ideas to find out the parameters for reducing road traffic accidents in greater Dhaka City.

Earthquake occurs due to the movement of the surface of the earth and various changes in earth crust. When an earthquake of fearful Richter scale occurs, the earth under our feet trembles, buildings collapse causing deaths and injuries, inducing fires, producing floods from collapsed dams and lands and so on. In this paper, hospitals and educational institutions are considered as critical infrastructures vulnerable to earthquake hazard in Dhaka city. Critical infrastructure is a term used by governments to describe assets that are essential for the functioning of a society and economy. Rapid visual screening (RVS) procedure is used here to assess the impact of earthquake hazard on educational institutions and health facilities of two wards in Dhaka City. The results from rapid visual screening can be used for a variety of applications that are an integral part of the earthquake disaster risk management program of a city or a region.

Disaster is a regular phenomenon in Bangladesh which affects almost every year.Recently a devastating cyclone AILA ruined coastal areas of Bangladesh and the normal pattern of livelihood of those areas specially- Koyra. This study tries to find out the changes in the livelihood pattern occurred due to AILA. Various environmental and non environmental factors of livelihood change are found which are responsible to make the situation very much challenging for the general people of that area. Frequent natural hazards, low income and expenditure,scarcity of pure drinking water,high level of saline intrusion, loss of physical capital,weak infrastructure, change of occupation,vulnerable housing condition,low coverage of sanitation and health facilities,forced migration,long time water logging etc.are found as the determinants of livelihood change in this area.Finally, according to data analysis and people’s perception some of the alternatives and adaptation mechanisms like improvement of marketing system, income generating activities in household level, crop diversification, saline resilience crop etc. are recommended which may better the situation for sustainable livelihood.
